Island Mljet is one of the largest amongst the Croatian island and is located at the farthest southern corner of the Croatia. On traveling from south to north in Adriatic, this island would be the first largest island that one comes across.
Mljet has been one of the greenest islands on the Croatian Adriatic and is covered with the dense Mediterranean vegetation. The island has remarkably beautiful virgin forest of Aleppo Pine trees. Since, it is at the corner, there is nothing to disturb the serenity of the island. Island Mljet has several mythologies attached to it and this place finds its mention in the masterpieces of great Greek bard Homer who glorified this small chunk of land in Dalmatian archipelago in his Odyssey. Mljet National Park
The northwestern part of the island is reserved and covered by the Mljet National Park and this park dignifies the first attempt towards protecting the original ecosystem in the Adriatic region. It was established in the early 1960s and covers almost one third of the island's area.
National park has two salt lakes embedded inland- Great lake (Veliko) and the small Lake (Malo jezero). These are called as deep bays due to their narrow openings into the open sea. Both these lakes are covered with dense and dark Mediterranean vegetation. You can easily commute to the national park via car and inside the parks premises and also you can go around the park cycling. One of the lakes has a Small Island on which the beautiful 12th century Benedictine Monastery is located. This is now being converted into a small restaurant and it is easily accessible via boats.
Transport facilities to Mljet
You can easily reach the main port Sobra of the island Mljet during summer en route Dubrovnik and Korcula that are on Jadrolinija's coastal line. Besides this, you can take ferry boats that commute in between Dubrovnik and Sobra and from there buses are available for Pomena and Polace. You can also rely on the passenger boats Nona Ana that travel in between Dubrovnik and Polace that leaves in the early morning hours and returns by afternoon.
